What Is The NAHB Student Competition?

The HBI Residential Construction Competition is one of the highlights at the annual International Builders' Show. The competition, held in conjunction with the NAHB convention, offers students an opportunity to challenge their skills and knowledge in preparing a realistic management proposal for a panel of Judges.

Each team is given a construction related problem to analyze. The teams will then be expected to present a complete management proposal to a panel of judges. Each team represents a local operating division of a large national home building company. The teams then present their new project to upper level management for consideration of funding and acquisition.

They are competing with the other operating divisions within the same corporation for project approval and funding. The management proposal consists of a complete estimate, schedule, budget, marketing plan, cash-flow statement and any other related information necessary to the project.

We typically receive the project plans and specifications around the middle of October. We have from the day we receive the package until December 27, to complete the project. Then in January, the team gets the opportunity to present their proposal before the judges at the Builders' Show. This year the Competition is sponsored by Centex Homes. Awards will then be presented to the winners at the Student Chapters Awards Ceremony.
